Smart Phones: Advantages and Disadvantages

Innovative tools such as “smart phones,” for example, the “iphone” and “blackberries” are beginning to draw serious attention for their learning potential. Way back in the days, television was considered the acme of technology. Today, our society has reached a new height of technology that no one could’ve imagined in 20-25 years back. The world has developed in terms of technology so much that the society basically depends on it for virtually everything. It is therefore very clear that technology has now become an important part of our daily life and families and individuals are affected everyday by different aspects of it. It is also fair to say that it is one of the main driving forces of the future and is definitely transforming our lives and shaping our future. To limit my discussion on the many contributions of technology, I will limit my discussion on “smart phones” along with how they affect our society daily, both positively and negatively. Some of the advantages and disadvantages are listed below:

Advantages:

  • These phones have wireless capabilities which makes is possible to access the internet anywhere in the globe as long as you have service.

  • Can be used as mp3 players

  • iphone and the Blackberry storm have touch screen capabilities with enhance graphical user interfaces for easy accessibility and functionality.

  • Smart phones have a GPS capability.

  • They can be used as organizers.


Disadvantages:

  • Some studies have linked smart phone use to some diseases like cancer.

  • Some people try to multi-task; for example driving and web browsing.

  • Instead of pay attention in class, some students may be busy texting.

  • They can be complicated to use, especially if you are technologically challenged.

  • Expect to break open your piggy bank or convince someone who loves you to buy you one - they are
expensive.
